Results from a major cluster-randomised trial led by WSU Global Health Kenya show that delivering antiretroviral therapy through community health workers significantly improves 12-month retention in care compared with standard facility-based services. The findings, published this month, have immediate implications for how counties design differentiated service delivery.
The study followed more than 3,000 participants across 24 facilities. Beyond improved retention, community-based delivery reduced the costs patients incurred to access care and improved viral suppression rates.
